Page updated 01/03/08.

The APS GOLD STAR DOG designation, based on behavior evaluation and the observations of staff and volunteers at the shelter, indicates a dog with an all-around great temperament which should be a good match for most kinds of home. If you're new to dog ownership or have small children, it's worth checking out our Gold Star Dogs first.
Some dogs may behave differently in their new homes. If you need help with your adopted dog or puppy, or have any concerns, please ask to speak to one of our dog trainers.
We highly recommend that all new dogs and puppies attend a basic obedience class.

** New adopters can sign up for 3 classes with one of our dog trainers for $45. For more information, speak with our adoption staff, or e-mail doginfo@apsofdurham.org **

Check out http://www.flickr.com/photos/bullcitydogs and http://apsofdurhamdogs.blogspot.com/ for pictures of our wonderful dogs in action!

Volunteers' Pick of the Week 12/20/08

JASMINE is a lovely, 2 year old Pit mix who's social and energetic. She was given up by her former family, who reported that she was housetrained and crate-trained. She knows some basic obedience and is very interested in food treats, so should be quick to learn more. She likes other dogs.
Jasmine is looking for an active home where she'll get good exercise and ongoing training.
More about Jasmine from one of our volunteers:
What a beautiful girl! Her former family's loss is our gain. She is such a sweetheart. The first time I met her - she was very eager to go outside, but totally respectful . We both enjoyed our walk so much; she kept checking with me to be sure she was doing the right thing.
Although Jasmine's physique is lean and muscular, she is soft at heart. She has a furrowed brow that makes her look worried, but she is really quite happy-go-lucky. Her golden-colored coat is simply luxurious. The heartwarming look in her eyes tells you she is ready to be a vital, loving and obedient member of a lucky forever family.

Jasmine lives in Kennel 2.

HUEY is a young (about 1 year old) Pit mix who's very sweet but a little shy and worried about new things. He responds well to kind handling and encouragement and will do well in a low-stress home with a family who'll take him to obedience class to help boost his confidence.

Huey lives in Kennel 41.

FOSTER CARE

IONA is a 4-5 year old Shepherd/Terrier mix who's friendly and gentle. Though she was a little worried initially at the shelter, she loved kind handling and petting, and just being with people.
Iona has settled into her foster home in no time at all, and is enjoying the comforts of home :-)
She can safely be left uncrated during the work day and is completely housetrained.
Iona would be a nice, low-key companion for a single person or couple, or for a quiet family with older children.
Here's more from Iona's foster mom:
Iona is a sweet-tempered, mellow dog and loves to have her belly rubbed. She's a low-key girl who seems to like a quiet home. She gets along with my cat and is housebroken.
Iona doesn't pull on the leash when she goes for walks, and she rarely barks. She can be shy when she meets new people, but she's a great buddy once she knows you.

Iona lives in Foster Care.

BRENDAN is a small-size Bull Terrier mix who's around a year old. He's affectionate, very social, and just a little sensitive so he'll benefit from kind handling and positive training methods. He loves food treats, so he should be a great dog to train.
Brendan is looking for a low-stress home where he'll get lots of love and attention.
Brendan is doing really well in his foster home - here's some news from his foster mom:
Brendan is a wonderful canine friend - I know he will add a lot of joy to the lucky family that adopts him!
In the short time we've had him, he has learned his name, how to sit, lie down, and is getting pretty good at "stay". His "leave it" is excellent, and he is very attentive to his human friends.
He's a low-key dog that just wants to be around people; he's very friendly to strangers and is working really hard to remember not to jump up when he gets excited to greet people or play.
He's mostly house-trained and is great on walks - doesn't pull, and wants to go wherever you want to. He especially loves fallen leaves and sprinting home if you like to run!
At first, he was quite sensitive to the loud noise of busy traffic on the road, but now he almost doesn't notice the cars whipping by on our walks.
Some of his favorite toys are tennis balls and ice cubes, and he will happily stay in his crate as long as he's got something interesting to chew on. The other night we had a get-together with 19 people in our living room and he was so good! Everyone raved at what a good dog he was.
Like all young dogs, he needs good exercise every day (and he'll play as long as you will!) but he's also a very lovey-dovey cuddler. Though he will chew on shoes if they're out (!), he's very gentle with toys, and not destructive in the house.
Most of the time he entertains himself by flattening his bones and tossing pieces of them up in the air to chase.
He's currently learning "stay", not to jump, and how to play with other dogs.
Brendan is an amazing dog to start with, and with a little more time & training, he will be an exceptional pet :-)

Brendan lives in Foster care.

LUCKY is a young Border Collie mix who's energetic, social and lots of fun! You would never guess that nearly 3 months ago he arrived at the shelter with severe injuries after being dragged along the road behind a truck. His optimistic spirit and cheerful good nature helped him endure lengthy and sometimes painful treatment for large areas of skin loss, bruises and abrasions, and he has made a miraculous recovery.
Lucky is in a foster home where he has had wonderful care and attention (as well as doggy companions to play with!) but he's now ready to find his forever home. He will do well with an energetic family who'll make sure he gets lots of love, good exercise and ongoing obedience training.

BEST POSER 12/04/08

Herald Sun Pet of the Week 12/27/08

LARRY is an endearing 7-8 month old Lab/Pit mix who's very social and playful. He likes to chase a ball (and pounce on it!), and LOVES to play with his toys! He also has quite a sensitive side, and will blossom with kind handling and obedience training for bonding and confidence-building. He likes other dogs.
Larry will be a great companion for a kind, active home.
More about Larry from one of his fans:
Larry is one of the nicest older puppies at the shelter. He has a lot going for him - he's super housetrained, active but gentle too, and he loves people and other dogs.
Larry also has traits that make him harder to place. He's a medium to large dog - at 8 months, he's still growing but shouldn't get past about 50lbs.
His fur is dark - but with a pretty white chest and paws. He's a lab/pit mix, so he needs a home with room for a larger dog and people that understand how loving pit mixes can be.
Larry had a wonderful day on Tuesday, December 23! A very nice couple came to visit him. He showed them around the visitation room and demonstrated what a smart, nice dog he is. Then he took them for a walk on the dogwalking trail. For a young dog, he walks very well on his leash - he doesn't pull and pays good attention to his handler.
Then he took them to the exercise pen and entertained them with his toys. He loves balls and soft toys; he's learned to "fetch" and also likes to hide them in a corner!
Larry showed them his nice "sit" and started working on "come". I have never seen him have such a good time :-)
Unfortunately, the couple could not adopt him, but they really made his day.
Come visit this super guy and let him show you around the shelter!

Larry lives in Kennel 26.

MOLLY is an approximately 2 year old Walker Hound who was found wandering in a very weak, extremely emaciated condition - at 25lbs, she weighed about half of the normal weight of a dog her size. The kind person who found her took her to a vet for shots and other much-needed medical care, and has nursed her back to health. She would have liked to keep her, but already has a house full of canine companions :-)
Molly is a sweet, gentle girl who also has a playful side. She likes other dogs.
Could you be the one to give Molly the kind home she deserves?

Molly lives in Kennel 21.

Volunteers' Pick of the Week 4/26/08

EDGAR is a handsome Lab/Chow mix who's 1 - 1 1/2 years old. He can be a little standoffish with new people at first, but he's always pleasant, cooperative and handleable. He seems to do fine with other dogs.
Edgar would be a low-maintenance companion for a working person or couple.
More about Edgar from one of our volunteers:
Edgar is a young dog but is no silly puppy. He's a calm, steady as a rock sort of dog. He's gentle and affectionate but jumping in laps is beneath his dignity, as is chasing funny toys :-)
He enjoys walks, one on one time, and being groomed.
Edgar is my "Easter egg"dog - he has a pink nose, purple tongue, and a beautiful yellow face! He's very well-housetrained, and likes to keep a neat, clean kennel.
Edgar would be a perfect, low-key hiking and walking companion for a lucky adopter.

ADOPTED 12/26/08

MONTY is a young Jack Russell Terrier/Corgi mix ( a little under a year old) who's social and cooperative, though a little worried in new situations. He's an affectionate boy who tries hard to make friends, and he'll blossom with kind handling and some obedience training to help him improve his confidence.
Here's more about Monty from one of our volunteers:
My name is Monty. I am unemployed right now, and that makes me sad - I need a job.
Here's my resume: I come from a long line of working dogs. I'm perky, full of life and very intelligent - you can see that in my gorgeous chocolate brown eyes. I'm sturdy and athletic, and keep myself fit and ready to work on a moment's notice.
I'm generally very happy, but I need guidance. I'm very devoted to my pack leader. I want to know what the rules are, and I will obey them faithfully.
I can be funny and charming, but I have to know what is allowed and what is not.
It's nice here at the shelter. I don't want to sound ungrateful, but I just want my own forever home.
Did I mention that I'm quite nice looking? My coat is very soft. It's mostly white (as with most Jack Russell Terriers), with dark chocolate markings on my body and my handsome face.
If you will give me a forever home, I will accept love as payment for my services :-)

OLIVE is a gentle, dainty Beagle who's about 4 years old. She's a sweet, shy little girl who loves to snuggle with you, preferably in your lap :-)
She walks nicely on a leash, and seems to like other dogs.
Olive will be a wonderful addition to a kind, low-stress home.

ADOPTED

CECELIA is an endearing little Pit mix who's about 4 years old. When she first arrived at the shelter, she showed lots of signs of having had a tough life, but her sweet, social, affectionate side shone through. She loves to be with people, and always tries to do her best. Since she's very fond of food treats, she should be quick and easy to train. She likes other polite dogs, but prefers human company and would love to be the only dog in a home :-)
Cecelia will be a wonderful, loyal companion for a settled family with older children.
Cecelia is doing SO well in foster care - here's what her foster mom has to say:
Cecelia is a fun-loving dog: she plays with us, her toys, and loves to go for walks. But don't let her cute pit face fool you - she's a sweet, sensitive girl.
She's a people pleaser, a cuddler, and a kisser. She even enjoys gently playing with our pet rabbit, Twitch. It's funny to watch them together because they get along so well.
Cecelia is also very well behaved. She is the most super housetrained dog I have ever seen. Her manners are incredible. She doesn't bark or jump all over people. She doesn't beg for food, just curls up next to your feet for a nap as you eat at the table. And smart - this girl has learned several new tricks since joining us: sit and paw (shake) among them!
It's obvious that Cecelia didn't have the best life before coming to the APS. She gets quite timid around strangers (especially men) and large groups. She can be easily startled by loud noises. But with some good guidance and some treats, Cecelia has adjusted beautifully. She is more willing to approach people she recognizes (a great example was the other day when she let our neighbor pet her. She even gave him a kiss!). While work still needs to be done, she's overcoming her fears and building confidence wonderfully.
We have been fostering Cecelia for almost 2 months. It has been such a joy to have her around! In the right home she will truly blossom.
Please consider our beautiful little Cecelia!

Gracie will blossom with lots of exercise and continued obedience training.
More about Gracie from one of our volunteers:
Gracie has learned a new command - she picked up "down" in three tries. This young lady would shine in an obedience class :-)
She recently had a real treat, a "play date" with another active young dog in our exercise pen. She plays with a lot of vigor but without any bad manners - she would love the dog park!
And last week, I discovered that Gracie loves soft, stuffed toys. She thinks they are much nicer than rope toys. She carries them on walks and even tries to hide them. She looked so cute, she made me laugh.
Adopt this princess and she will cheer you up on a down day!

ADOPTED 12/18/08

ZIGGY is a cute Beagle/Dachshund mix who's 3-4 years old. He's a very sensitive little guy, but he does enjoy gentle handling and attention. He loves food treats, which should be a big help with training and confidence-building.
Ziggy needs a low-stress, adult home where he can be a little spoiled at last :-)
Ziggy recently had a wonderful day out (probably the happiest day of his life so far!) at the home of one of our volunteers - here's her report:
I think Ziggy is a mixture. On one hand, he is sensitive, submissive, a bit worried, and needs gentle, mindful handling so as not to overwhelm him. On the other hand, I saw a fun, funny, playful, happy character emerging. Once out of the shelter environment, that playful side came out pretty fast!
Ziggy has learned that doing a "sit" makes good things happen, so he offered "sits" readily. He has also created his own unique twist: as I walked along, he would leap in the air, then literally roll somersaults around my feet to get my attention, and pop up into a "sit" to see if I'd give him a treat. Very cute.
His favorite toy was the soccer-size ball. I'd throw it, and he would chase and push it across the grass, through the trees, across the grass again, having a great time. Then he would look up, see me on the other side of the yard, and come running back. I think it would be pretty easy to put those pieces together into playing "fetch."
Another favorite game was "come." I called him the first time, and he came, even from far away, and he got a handful of chicken as a reward. After that, he would come dashing any time I called, or even if my body language just looked like I might be thinking about calling him. Good boy!
Ziggy is VERY attentive and motivated by food, which will help his training, which in turn will help his confidence. We practiced going through the hula hoop. At first he was wary. Using treats to guide him, he progressed to stepping through it. In very short order, I raised the level, and he was jumping through it!
Indoors, his house manners were perfect. Respectful of my things, no chewing, quiet and patient when he had to wait alone, good kitchen behavior. Outdoors he did a moderate amount of urine marking (like most adult male dogs), but didn't even try to do that inside, so he earned off-leash freedom in the house very quickly.
Using a step-by-step introduction process, he met and interacted with my dog politely and appropriately through the baby gate. He also successfully met and interacted with a repair man (who was also a dog lover). Ziggy was a bit scared at first, but looked to me for guidance. A couple of treats later, Ziggy was relaxed and friendly with him. No barking then, or at any other time during the day.
Ziggy liked short sessions of gentle touch, especially to his sides and under his chin. He also seemed happy to hang out with me, without needing direct attention. He lay down on a rug while I ate lunch, and while I read.
I hope Ziggy's next step in life is into a kind forever home where that relaxed, playful character can blossom.

SADIE: This little girl has a lot of energy and is still very sweet and gentle. She is a bit on the anxious side so will need kind, quiet handling. She is learning to sit for a treat. She enjoys rawhides and likes to use one as a toy. She will hold still for cuddling, but is still getting used to the idea of it. Because of this, she will do best in a home with older children.

GREGORY is a very cute 6-7 month Corgi/Jack Russell Terrier mix with unique good looks :-)
He's perky, social, outgoing, and LOVES to play! Since he's very athletic (just watch him jump!), he would be a great little dog to take to Flyball, Frisbee or agility.
Gregory would be a great match for an active single person or couple, or family with older children who would enjoy playing with him.

CANDACE is a pretty Lab mix who's about 18 months old. She's very energetic and likes to play with her toys and with other dogs. She already knows "sit" and since she's very food-motivated, she should be a wonderful dog to take to obedience class.
Candace will be a great family companion.

RONA is a lovely, 2-3 year old Lab mix who's social and very playful. She has a joyful "prance" to her walk that makes us all smile. She LOVES people, is excellent with other dogs and already knows some basic obedience ("sit" and "down").
Rona will be a wonderful family companion.
Rona is doing great in foster care - her foster family reports that "she's a doll"!
She's housetrained, and has fitted in well with her new routine. She behaved very nicely at a Petsmart adoption event, greeting every passerby with a nice tail wag and an invitation to pet her (humans) or play (dogs)! She rode very nicely in the car, either lying quietly or politely watching the world go by :-)

GRACIE is a gorgeous young Boxer who's about 1 1/2 years old. She was quite stressed after being given up to the shelter by her former owner, but she's quickly blossomed into a social and affectionate girl with a very playful side :-)
She loves food treats so she should be easy to train, and she's really excellent with other dogs.
Gracie will be a wonderful addition to a Boxer-loving home.
