Want to learn how to train your dog basic behaviors like “Sit” or fancy tricks like “Shake”? Come to the APS Dog Training Class any Saturday from 9-10am. No advance registration is required, this is a drop in class for absolute beginners and it is FREE to anyone that has adopted or is considering adopting from the APS.

We will be working with shelter dogs to learn games and exercises that you can take home to work on with your own dog.
All participants will get a chance to practice the skills taught during class with a shelter dog.
The cost for the class is $10 (free for APS adopters and volunteers!) and all money collected goes to the Animal Protection Society of Durham.
Start Time: 9:00 am
Date: Every Saturday
End Time: 10:00 amHere are the answers to frequently asked questions about this class:
What skills will be taught?
Every week we will cover sit, attention, and name recognition as well as discussing how to handle shyness and jumping. Bonus skills that may be covered include: wait, leave it, down, spin, and catch. Students will have an opportunity to stay after class and ask questions about their own dog.
Are the same skills taught every week?
Yes, the same basic skills will be covered every week, but there will be a different bonus skill taught each week.
How many times should I come to the class?
Students will find that they benefit if they can repeat the class 2 or 3 times, but you will learn enough in one class to go home and start working with your dog.
Do I need to register?
No, this is a drop in class, so there is no registration required. The $10 class fee will be collected at the start of class and can be paid by cash or a check written out to the APS of Durham.
Can I bring my dog?
No, this is a class for people only. The instructor will demonstrate the training methods using some of our shelter dogs that are new to training. All students will have a chance to try out the skills with a shelter dog. We will only work with one dog at a time. You will have an opportunity to stay after class and ask questions about your own dog.
I don’t have a dog right now, but I am thinking about getting one. Is this a good class for me?
This is the perfect class for you because you don’t need to own a dog to take it. It is much easier to learn a little bit about training before you get your dog so that you can start training your dog as soon as you bring him/her home.
Is this class suitable for children?
Yes, kids 10 or over in the company of an adult are welcome to attend.
Who is teaching the class?
This class is taught by Sharon Ashe, a CPDT (Certified Professional Dog Trainer) with over 300 hours of experience teaching training classes. Sharon is a volunteer for the Animal Protection Society of Durham.
