What to Expect Your First Week Home Introducing a new animal to your home for the first time is exciting, but can also be stressful. Take it slowly and keep in mind that it will take time for the two of you to get to know and understand each other's personalities and expectations. Here are some hints to consider. Good luck! • Take it slowly! Don't overwhelm your animal with too much information all at once. • Introduce the animal to your household slowly, starting with the areas he will be spending most of his time. • Show the litterbox to your new cat immediately. Be sure to set it up in a quiet but accessible location. • Establish a reliable walking schedule for your dog to assist with housetraining. (Be patient! Accidents can happen during this time period--even for dogs who are house-trained!) • Obedience training is highly recommended -- even for puppies. Dog behaviorists have numerous simple but valuable tricks up their sleeves that can enhance your relationship with your dog--and make your first months together MUCH easier. • If you encounter problems or start feeling overwhelmed by the behaviors of your new animal, contact the shelter where you adopted the animal or an animal behaviorist and do some trouble-shooting. Don't give up!
