Happy Endings - Claudia (updated 9/11/05)

Claudia with her brother and sister.

Claudia being a wonderful mom.

This is Claudia and her story.

Claudia came to shelter on the September 15th 2004 looking like so many of the female dogs the shelter gets with sagging nipples from having multiple litters of puppies.  She quickly won the hearts of everyone at the shelter especially one volunteer who at the time had another foster dog and was unable to take Claudia into foster care.  Claudia was tested for heartworms and like so many of the dogs that come into the shelter she tested positive.  The decision was made to spay her then do her heartworm treatment a month later.  When she was on the table getting ready to be spayed they discovered that Claudia had a heart arrhythmia so they could not spay her.  That weekend she was able to go into foster care and get prepared for her heartworm treatment.  The plan was to do the heartworm treatment for a high risk dog which meant she would get 1 shot and then wait a month.  She got her first shot and was doing well in her foster home, then a visit to the vet to check her chunky figure turned out to prove what we were all thinking that she was going to have puppies.  The foster mom decided to go ahead and let her have the puppies and foster them until they were of age to be adopted.  She gave birth to 8 beautiful babies in the wee hours of the morning November 10th 2004.  Even though she was a wonderful mom and did everything right, 3 of the pups did not make it.  But the surviving 5 turned out to be the 5 cutest puppies ever.  Claudia is finally Heartworm free and living the life of luxury with her brother and sister.

Claudia was featured in the Winter 2005 APS newsletter click here to see the newsletter.

.When I first brought Claudia home I knew she was extra special, she fit right in and took an instant shine to her sister Roxie.  She is finally through her hormonal stage and has decided that her brother Buddy isn't out to get her like she originally thought.  I did not plan on keeping her when I brought her home to foster, I was only going to be her temporary reprieve until she had her heartworm treatment and got spayed, I got way more than I bargained for but I would not trade the experience that Claudia and I have been through together for anything.  Once I got all her pups adopted, I knew I couldn't let her go, she was so happy here with her Roxie, my other Boxer mix (adopted from the Shelter in February of 2002 click here for her happy ending) and her favorite stuffed purple elephant.
