Nigel came home with me at the end of March 2006.
Two days later (on April Fools' Day) he was participating in the UNC-CH
Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society. Pictured here with two of my
students, Nigel did some laps for my beloved dog Jenny (another APS adoptee)
who died earlier that year from cancer.
Nigel himself had had a near death experience: he was so unhappy at the APS
shelter he was scheduled to be humanely euthanized but for the heroic
intervention of Susan DeLoatche, who snatched him up and took him home to
foster until he could find a home with me, Jake (see his story on this
page), and kitties Winston, Maddie, and Willie. I think Nigel is very, very
happy now, though he's still a little out of it and goofy; his nickname is
Rain Man.
At the dog park, which he adores, he is famous because all he does is run
the perimeter, sometimes for hours on end, stopping only briefly to submerge
his paws and head in the water trough. People are always laughing and
pointing at the crazy white dog, and asking me: does he ever stop? The
answer is "no" and that's the way Jake and I like it.
We think Nigel runs because he's so happy to be alive.
