Happy Endings - Sugar (adopted 3/5/03)

On March 5th, 2003 I adopted a dog from the shelter. I don't remember her name at the shelter but her No. was 34838. She is a Boxer/Aus Shep mix. She became much larger than anyone expected at the time of the adoption. Now she is a muscular 80 pounds. I named her Sugar - "Sug" is what I call her. I retired shortly before I adopted Sug so we have been constant companions during the past 4 years. She is highly intelligent and, as her name implies, very sweet. During the past 3 years we have not missed a single day hiking at least an hour and a half - often a lot more - and, when off leash, she never goes out of sight. She is at home in a tent when we go camping and, in my new canoe, seems perfectly relaxed. At first she seemed puzzled by her life jacket but now seems unaware of it. She sits quietly for a few minutes, watching the scenery, and then she curls up and goes to sleep.
Sug is a gorgeous creature and a wonderful companion. I am so grateful that the shelter was there for her and that the staff guided me to her. It is beyond my comprehension why anyone would have abandoned her.
Here are a couple of pictures taken just today.
