Meet our July Volunteers of the Month!
The mother and daughter team of Debbie and Becca Andrews began volunteering in January and fit in so quickly that it seems they’ve always been here!
Right after they began working with the cats, staff members reported what great volunteers they were, both friendly and hard working. They spend their time cleaning the cat rooms, which involves changing the bedding, disinfecting, changing the litter and then feeding. After that they spend time giving love and attention to the cats and the kittens.
They do such great work that Debbie is now a trainer for new volunteers working with the cats.
Becca is a kind and mature young lady who clearly enjoys her time at the shelter and brings joy to the animals she helps.
It can be difficult volunteering, especially when there are so many good cats waiting for homes. Debbie says “While we try very hard not to have favorites, some animals do really capture your heart. Gretta (a long haired black cat) really got to Becca, especially since Gretta would just lay in Becca’s arms like a baby and purr the whole time. Josie stands out for me, because I worried over her, as she started her time at the shelter so scared, but eventually came out of her shell and found a home!”
Becca is a rising high school freshman and Debbie works for the EPA. They both enjoy photography and reading. Debbie also enjoy gardening, cross stitch, and other needlecrafts, while Becca keeps busy with tennis, soccer, drawing and playing with their cats. They have three cats at home, Chantilly, Sidney and Rio. And they also adopted a cat Chelsey, who has since passed, from the APS back in 1990!
Debbie says “What really stands out to me, is the caring that the employees show for the animals and for the people they meet. It is a privilege to come in and work alongside such great people.” The APS can assure her and Becca that the employees are just as privileged to have such great volunteers as them to work with!
