Spay Neuter Voucher Program

It has long been known that increasing the number of animals that are spayed and neuter is absolutely necessary if the number of unwanted animals is to ever decrease.  Getting the spay/neuter message out to the public is key to the mission of the APS of Durham and we are are always working on new ways to increase the number of animals that are fixed in our community.

There are already a number of wonderful organizations and programs available (such as SNAP, POP-NC, Friends of Animals, and AnimalKind’s The $20 Fix) in this area which we encourage people needing low cost alternatives to use.  Targeted spay/neuter, reaching out to low income residents, is a crucial part of the spay/neuter equation and we now have a new tool to use when reaching out to this segment of the population.

With generous donations from donors we are able to offer assistance at the “front lines”, right here at the shelter when people surrender litters or redeem their lost intact pets.  Our front desk staff discuss the various low cost options available and if the individual is not able to qualify for an existing program we will give them a voucher (for a small $20 co-pay) to be used for a free spay/neuter at the Affordable Animal Care Spay Neuter Clinic in Durham which is also generously participating in this program with us.

Since this plan was implemented late last year our staff has made over 45 spay/neuter appointments that may otherwise have never happened.  We are obviously excited about this and hope to continue this program as long as funds are available.
