APS Sponsors

  • Special Funds

The APS has designated special funds to help us with some of our special  needs.

Adoption Assistance Fund: More than 75% of all animals that come through our doors receive medical attention and this fund provides APS the resources necessary to provide animals the proper care.  This fund is utilized for animals available for adoption and will allow the APS to offset the adoption fees for animals various times throughout the year for special “Adoption Promotions”.

Spay/Neuter Community Fund: This fund supports the work that the APS does to end pet overpopulation and the resulting deaths of animals in our shelter by removing barriers to spay/neuter for companion animals. We address the main causes that keep people from doing the right thing: cost.  In 2009, APS implemented a voucher program to assist pet owners with the cost of sterilizing their animals.

Sullivan’s Fund: Named in remembrance of Sullivan, a beloved companion and dear friend who is deeply missed. This fund was created to assist heartworm positive dogs find their forever homes.  Each year the Animal Protection Society of Durham discovers that many dogs have heartworm and often potential adopters are deterred from adopting these animals because they are aware of the expensive treatment needed to bring them back to health.  The Sullivan Fund provides the resources for the treatment of these adoptable dogs and assists them overcoming a significant obstacle on their way to finding a good home.  By donating, you can give heartworm positive dogs a second chance.

Tiffany Fund: This fund assists with needed emergency medical care for stray, homeless and abandoned animals that arrive at the Durham County Animal Shelter. As an open access shelter, we often get in animals that require medical treatment for infections, infestations, abuse and neglect. Unfortunately, we also see some that have extensive injuries or serious medical conditions the treatment of which, because of our limited funds, presents us with real challenges. Sometimes heartbreaking decisions have to be made to euthanize otherwise adoptable animals because the diagnosis and/or treatment of remediable conditions is beyond our financial capabilities. This fund provides the resources for specialized medical or surgical treatment that will save lives.
