  • Volunteer of the month – Karin Pond

We are always in need of weekday cat volunteers and for the past year and half we have been lucky to have a wonderfully consistent weekly volunteer to work with the cats, Karin Pond, who is April’s APS Volunteer of the Month.

Karin began volunteering after attending an APS event at Duke Gardens in 2007 where she learned about the great work being done at the Durham County Animal Shelter.  She has been coming in to volunteer nearly every week since.  She assists the staff and cleaning the cat rooms and spends time socializing the cats.  Her favorite job is spending time with the shy cats and giving them some love and attention, teaching them that there are good people and that the shelter is a safe place for them.  Many people do not know how much the cats here need and crave attention but Karin understands this and has made our cats a part of her life.  She also plays a valuable role by talking with the public when they visit and playing matchmaker, pairing up good cats with good homes!

We are also fortunate to have Karin’s participation on the Public Relations Committee where she helps with promoting the mission of the APS through effective communications.

Karin has two cats (Jasper and Riley) and two dogs (Brady and Devan).  When she is not at work or the shelter she enjoys running the Duke Trail, gardening and reading.  We thank Karin for her time and commitment to the cats at the shelter!
