Thank you for signing up to volunteer at an APS community event! Please find our events training module below. Whether you are signed up to be a table volunteer, dog handler, or cat handler, you must complete this before volunteering at an outside community event.


Below are steps to become a volunteer for outside community events.

Event Volunteer

  1. Complete APS Volunteer Profile. Once your application has been processed, you will receive a welcome packet with a link to the orientation presentation, FAQ about shelter volunteering, and a shelter map.
  2. Once you’ve completed Orientation, complete the Event Volunteer training module above.
  3. Once completed, email certificate to Anna Wilcox at anna.wilcox@apsofdurham.org
  4. After completing both Orientations, you can sign up through your VicNet portal to find volunteer hours that are right for you.

Dog Handler for Events

  1. Complete APS Volunteer Profile at the link at the top of the page. Once your application has been processed, you will receive a welcome packet with a link to the orientation presentation, FAQ about shelter volunteering, and a shelter map.
  2. Once you’ve completed Orientation, set up a time to be trained to become a Dog Walker. *You must have 8 hours of Dog Walking experience to become a Dog Handler for events.
  3. Once you’ve completed Orientation, complete the Event Volunteer training module above.
  4. Once completed, email certificate to Anna Wilcox at anna.wilcox@apsofdurham.org
  5. After completing both Orientations, you can sign up through your VicNet portal to find volunteer hours that are right for you.

Cat Handler for Events

  1. Complete APS Volunteer Profile at the link at the top of the page. Once your application has been processed, you will receive a welcome packet with a link to the orientation presentation, FAQ about shelter volunteering, and a shelter map.
  2. Once you’ve completed Orientation, set up a time to be trained to become a Cat Care volunteer. *You must have 5 hours of Cat Care experience to become a Cat Handler for events.
  3. Once you’ve completed Orientation, complete the Event Volunteer training module above.
  4. Once completed, email certificate to Anna Wilcox at anna.wilcox@apsofdurham.org
  5. After completing both Orientations, you can sign up through your VicNet portal to find volunteer hours that are right for you.

All current and new APS Volunteers must complete this orientation before signing up to volunteer at an outside community event.
