Lauren Glover, a Girl Scout with Union Baptist Church Troop 870, decided to promote and give back to the homeless and neglected animals of Durham County as part of her Silver Award project – the culminating service project as a Girl Scout.
She brought her troop to APS, as well as a Brownie group. Before she began her presentation on APS and the benefits of pet adoption, she helped the Brownie Scouts create braided fleece toys for the dogs and cats at the shelter.
Once her presentation was completed, we split everyone into two groups – one group toured the shelter, and the other met with Julie Handy, Animal Behavior Manager, and APS adoptable dog, Arthur. Julie spoke with the Girl Scouts about animal behavior, do’s and don’ts when approaching a dog, and even let each of them pet Arthur. Julie also had Arthur show off a few behavior commands he learned from the APS Animal Behavior Team.
To top off the visit, Lauren’s troop brought in donations for the animals and staff of APS. And Lauren sponsored one of our dog cages through our Sponsor A Cage program!
Thank you to Lauren, her mother Vera, and the Girl Scouts and Brownie Scouts of Union Baptist Church! We hope you had a wonderful time visiting and learning about all that we do at APS!
